Plot Outline: It’s 1985 and Stevo is a rare animal, a punk rocker in the Mormon stronghold of Salt Lake City, Utah. He just graduated from college with honours and now his life is a nutty roller coaster ride of rock shows, stealing cars, beating up rednecks and non-stop partying with his buddy, Heroine Bob, and his girlfriend. But with the scene getting lame and Stevo going nowhere fast, he has to put his punk ideals to the test. With a choice between “No Future” and Harvard Law School, what’s a guy with blue hair supposed to do?
Review: SLC Punk is certainly not a film to watch to unwind to. It’s hard hitting and perhaps ground breaking, I’m not sure. Stevo narrates with his support of chaos and wasting his educated mind, being one of only two punks in Salt Lake City. It is a fascinating film, not the sort I would usually watch, but I found it intriguing. The characters are wonderfully complex. Matthew Lillard plays Stevo, his most challenging role that I have seen him play and he is excellent. This character has far more scope than his characters in Scream and Scooby Doo for example (he certainly chooses a range of roles). Michael Goorjian plays Stevo’s best friend Bob, fantastically. And Annabeth Gish plays Bob‘s hippy girlfriend, another break away from the norm, for this actress, and a successful job. SLC Punk is an insight into one phase that the youth of America went through, and the film is a journey I would urge most to go on.
Jennifer’s Character: Jennifer plays Sandy, Stevo’s girlfriend. This has got to be Jennifer’s role where she plays against previous typecasting the most. Her appearance is altered greatly, heavy dark makeup and black hair. I will warn fans of Jennifer’s other work though (where she plays a ‘good girl,’ for want of a better term), that in this film, Sandy does drugs and is seen cheating on Stevo. Sandy is not a central character within the film, the two best friends are. She is present throughout most of the film however, at parties etc. But her main scenes consist of an ‘acid trip’ with Stevo, very odd including hallucinations, and when Stevo discovers her cheating on him and he beats up the guy she sleeps with. Jennifer does a fantastic job in this film, a good career move, showing her versatility as an actress.
